Service overview

Car window tinting in Calgary starts at $249 for two front windows in carbon film, $299 in nano-ceramic, and $449 for a full vehicle.

Here's the honest part most shops skip: Alberta only lets you run any shade on the glass behind the driver — the front side windows and windshield can't take dark aftermarket tint. On the glass we can tint, our Premium Nano-Ceramic film rejects up to 88% of the infrared heat you actually feel, so your leather and dash survive another prairie summer.

What ceramic tint does

Why auto tint is a summer upgrade, not a cosmetic one

  1. Infrared rejection

Rejects up to 88% of the infrared heat you feel, so the cabin doesn't turn into an oven on a July afternoon.

  2. UV protection

Blocks 99.9% of UV — SPF 1,000 for your skin and for the dash that cracks and fades without it.

  3. Signal friendly

Non-metallic ceramic, so it won't fight your GPS, cell signal, Bluetooth or radar cruise.

  4. Lifetime warranty

It won't bubble, peel or purple on you — backed for as long as you own the car.

What's legal on each window

Under Alberta's Vehicle Equipment Regulation, the glass behind the driver can take any shade — the front doors and windshield cannot. Here's the whole rule in one picture.

Windshield
Visor strip only
A tinted band along the top only, above the manufacturer's AS1 line. No full-windshield aftermarket tint.
Front side windows
Not permitted
Alberta prohibits aftermarket tint on the driver and front passenger windows outright — there is no legal percentage. The only exception is a physician-supported medical exemption, and even then the film must be clear UV film at 50%+ VLT.
Rear side windows
Any VLT
Go as dark as you like, down to 5% limo, provided the vehicle has working side mirrors on both sides.

Same rule as the rear side glass — any shade, with both side mirrors present and functional.

Heat Science

Light Isn't Heat

Cheap dyed tint just darkens the glass — it barely touches the heat. Our nano-ceramic film blocks the infrared that actually cooks your cabin, so a black interior in a July parking lot stays livable when you climb back in. On an EV the stakes are higher still — see what a glass roof does to heat-soak on a parked Tesla.

Infrared Heat Rejection

Our Premium Nano-Ceramic film blocks up to 88% of the heat-generating IR rays, reducing cabin temperature by up to 15°C.

UV Protection (SPF 1,000)

Blocks 99.9% of UV — the same rays that fade leather, crack a dash, and burn the arm you rest on the door all summer.

What Calgary Drivers Say

Real, verified 5-star Google reviews from Obsidian Auto customers.

"You took me as a walk in on a rainy Monday morning, back a month ago, to tint both driver and passenger window with ceramic! I got pretty lucky that day and you treated me and my vehicle with respect and was fortunate enough to be in and out in a couple hrs!! I realize that this is not typical for scheduling and I want to make that clear. Your installer did an awesome job and I admit I was a bit concerned when he told me "don't roll your windows down for five days"… The quality of work is excellent and I am very happy. From my experience, I highly recommend doing business with these people!!"

FAQ

Auto tint in Calgary, answered

Alberta tint legality, carbon vs ceramic, heat rejection and aftercare — with more across every service in our site-wide FAQ.

Under Alberta's Vehicle Equipment Regulation (Traffic Safety Act), you can apply any shade you like to the rear side windows and the rear windshield, as long as your vehicle has working side mirrors on both sides. Aftermarket tint is NOT permitted on the front driver and passenger windows, and the windshield may only carry a tinted strip along the top (above the manufacturer's AS1 line). At Obsidian Auto we apply legal rear tint to factory spec, and we'll walk you through exactly what's compliant for your vehicle before we start — no surprises, no guesswork.

Carbon tint is a color-stable dyed film: it delivers privacy, a clean dark look, and 99% UV protection without ever fading to purple, but its heat rejection is standard. Ceramic tint (our Premium Nano-Ceramic line) uses non-metallic ceramic particles that block infrared heat — the part of sunlight you actually feel — rejecting up to 88% of IR at our 20% shade while staying signal-friendly. In Calgary, carbon starts at $249 for two front windows and ceramic at $299; ceramic is the upgrade most clients choose for the heat performance through our long, high-UV summers.

Yes. Calgary sits at roughly 1,045 m elevation with some of the most intense UV exposure of any major Canadian city, and chinook sun glare is relentless. Our Premium Nano-Ceramic tint rejects up to 88% of infrared heat and 99.9% of UV rays, dropping cabin temperature by up to 15°C and protecting leather and dashboards from cracking and fade. For a daily-driven vehicle parked outdoors, ceramic tint pays for itself in comfort and interior preservation.

No. Older metallic and 'mirror' tints interfered with signals because metal blocks radio waves. Our nano-ceramic films use non-conductive ceramic particles, so they're completely signal-friendly for GPS, cellular, Bluetooth, radio, and radar/lidar cruise systems. You get full heat rejection with zero impact on your electronics.

It depends on the shade and film quality. High-quality ceramic tint at 35% or 50% VLT keeps excellent inside-out clarity, even on dark winter evenings and through Deerfoot Trail's low chinook glare. Cheap dyed films are what look murky at night. For year-round Alberta driving we typically recommend a 50% or 35% ceramic shade on any legally tintable glass where night clarity matters most.

VLT (Visible Light Transmission) is the percentage of light a film lets through, so a lower number means a darker tint: 5% VLT ('limo') is the darkest and 70% is nearly clear. Rear glass in Alberta can go as dark as 5%, which is popular on trucks and SUVs for privacy. For a factory-matched look on a vehicle that already has dark rear glass, a 20% ceramic shade matches it closely.

Wait 3 to 5 days after installation before rolling your windows down. That gives the mounting solution time to fully evaporate and the adhesive to cure to the glass. Rolling them down too early can peel or shift the film. Minor haze or small water pockets in the first week are normal and disappear as the film dries — our lifetime warranty covers any film that bubbles, peels, or discolours after that.

Yes, but the rules are strict. Alberta doesn't set a front-window darkness percentage — it prohibits aftermarket tint on the windshield and both front side windows outright. The only exception is a medical or physical-condition exemption, and even then the approved film must be clear UV window film with a combined visible light transmittance of 50% or more — not a dark shade. Mirror-like or reflective film is never legal on any window regardless of darkness. We apply legally compliant tint to your rear glass and can walk you through the exemption process if a physician has recommended UV film.

Premium nano-ceramic tint rejects roughly 90–99% of infrared heat — the part of sunlight you feel — versus only about 10–40% for dyed or basic carbon film, and posts around 60–70% TSER (total solar energy rejected) versus 35–45% for dyed. On UV, quality ceramic and carbon films both block about 99% of UVA and UVB rays; window film that blocks 99%+ UV qualifies for the Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation. Because our ceramic film is non-metallic, you get that heat and UV performance with zero interference to GPS, cell, Bluetooth, or radar cruise systems.
