What window tint is legal in Calgary, Alberta?

Under section 70 of Alberta's Vehicle Equipment Regulation, you can apply any shade to the rear side windows and the rear window, as long as the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides. No tinting film at all is allowed on the windshield or on the front side windows to the left and right of the driver — there is no legal percentage and no exception for a strip — unless you hold a medical exemption permit from the Government of Alberta, and that permit only allows clear UV film with a combined visible light transmittance of 50% or more. Film that reflects headlights or sunlight into other drivers' eyes isn't allowed on any window. We'll go through what the law says for each window before we quote.

What's the difference between carbon and ceramic window tint?

Accepted Answer

Carbon tint is a color-stable dyed film: it delivers privacy, a clean dark look, and 99% UV protection without ever fading to purple, but its heat rejection is standard. Ceramic tint (our Premium Nano-Ceramic line) uses non-metallic ceramic particles that block infrared heat — the part of sunlight you actually feel — rejecting up to 88% of IR at our 20% shade while staying signal-friendly. In Calgary, the three rear windows start at $399 in carbon and $499 in ceramic, and a full vehicle at $449 and $649; ceramic is the upgrade most clients choose for the heat performance through our long, high-UV summers.

Yes. Calgary sits at roughly 1,045 m elevation with some of the most intense UV exposure of any major Canadian city, and chinook sun glare is relentless. Accepted Answer

No. Older metallic and 'mirror' tints interfered with signals because metal blocks radio waves. Our nano-ceramic films use non-conductive ceramic particles, so they're completely signal-friendly for GPS, cellular, Bluetooth, radio, and radar/lidar cruise systems. Does window tint reduce night visibility in Calgary winters?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the shade and film quality. High-quality ceramic tint at 35% or 50% VLT keeps excellent inside-out clarity, even on dark winter evenings and through Deerfoot Trail's low chinook glare. Cheap dyed films are what look murky at night. For year-round Alberta driving we typically recommend a 50% or 35% ceramic shade on any legally tintable glass where night clarity matters most.

How dark is too dark? What does VLT mean?

Accepted Answer

VLT (Visible Light Transmission) is the percentage of light a film lets through, so a lower number means a darker tint: 5% VLT ('limo') is the darkest and 70% is nearly clear. Rear glass in Alberta can go as dark as 5%, which is popular on trucks and SUVs for privacy. For a factory-matched look on a vehicle that already has dark rear glass, a 20% ceramic shade matches it closely.

How long until I can roll my windows down after tinting?

Accepted Answer

Wait 3 to 5 days after installation before rolling your windows down. That gives the mounting solution time to fully evaporate and the adhesive to cure to the glass. Rolling them down too early can peel or shift the film. Minor haze or small water pockets in the first week are normal and disappear as the film dries — our lifetime warranty covers any film that bubbles, peels, or discolours after that.

Can I get a medical exemption to tint my front windows in Alberta?

Accepted Answer

Only in narrow cases. Alberta doesn't set a front-window darkness percentage — it prohibits tinting film on the windshield and both front side windows outright. The exemption is for people diagnosed with skin cancer (melanoma, basal or squamous cell) or bullous pemphigus; photophobia, migraines, cataracts and rosacea don't qualify. You apply to the Government of Alberta by email with a physician's note, the permit costs $55, you have to carry it in the vehicle, and it only allows clear UV window film with a combined visible light transmittance of 50% or more — not a dark shade. Reflective film that throws headlights or sunlight into other drivers' eyes isn't allowed on any window. We can walk you through the exemption process if your physician supports it.

How much heat does ceramic tint actually block, and does it protect against UV?

Accepted Answer

Premium nano-ceramic tint rejects roughly 90–99% of infrared heat — the part of sunlight you feel — versus only about 10–40% for dyed or basic carbon film, and posts around 60–70% TSER (total solar energy rejected) versus 35–45% for dyed. On UV, quality ceramic and carbon films both block about 99% of UVA and UVB rays; window film that blocks 99%+ UV qualifies for the Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation.
