Question 1

What is the difference between a vinyl wrap and colour-change PPF?

Accepted Answer

Vinyl wrap is a thin (2-3 mil) film built primarily for colour change and style: it transforms your car's look but does almost nothing for rock chips and has a faint 'orange peel' texture up close. Colour-change PPF is a thick (8-mil) self-healing urethane film that gives you the same colour change plus real impact protection and a deeper, wet-paint gloss. Here's the honest rule of thumb I give people: go vinyl when the goal is a fresh look for roughly a third of the price; step up to colour-change PPF when you want that look and actual protection against Calgary gravel and rock chips.

Question 2

How much does a vinyl wrap cost in Calgary?

Accepted Answer

At Obsidian Auto, vinyl wrap services in Calgary start at $249 for interior trim, $299 for a chrome delete, and $399 for roof or hood wraps. A full color-change wrap is quoted per vehicle because price depends on the car's size, body complexity, and the film and finish you choose. We use genuine 3M 2080 and Avery Dennison vinyl, and every quote includes our knifeless, paint-safe installation.

Question 3

How long does a vinyl car wrap last in a Calgary winter?

Accepted Answer

A well-maintained vinyl wrap typically lasts 3 to 5 years in Calgary's climate. Road-salt brine, sand, and deep winter cold can make any vinyl more brittle over time, so regular touchless washing and parking indoors meaningfully extend a wrap's life. We use premium 3M and Avery Dennison films specifically because they hold up to chinook freeze-thaw cycles far better than budget vinyl.

Question 4

Does a vinyl wrap damage the paint underneath?

Accepted Answer

No — not when it's installed and removed correctly on factory OEM paint in good condition. High-quality 3M and Avery vinyl actually shields the original paint from UV and light abrasion while it's on, and we use knifeless tape so no blade ever touches your paint. The one exception is a vehicle with cheap aftermarket respray: poorly bonded repaint can lift on removal. We always inspect your paint and tell you the honest risk before wrapping.

Question 5

What finishes can a vinyl wrap give me?

Accepted Answer

Vinyl gives you finishes paint simply can't: satin, matte, gloss, colour-flip/chameleon, carbon fibre, brushed metal, chrome, pearl, and camo, among others. That's a big reason drivers pick a vinyl car wrap over a respray in Calgary — you can run a matte military green or a colour-shifting gloss today and go back to factory colour later, all without ever repainting the car.

Question 6

Should I get a partial wrap or a full wrap?

Accepted Answer

A partial wrap (roof, hood, mirrors, accents, or a chrome delete starting at $299) is the move when you want a sharp accent or a 'night package' look on a budget. A full colour-change wrap covers every painted panel for a complete transformation and is quoted per vehicle. Many Calgary clients start with a chrome delete or roof wrap and build up from there; we're happy to map out a staged plan.

Question 7

Does a vinyl wrap affect resale value?

Accepted Answer

Generally it helps protect resale rather than hurt it. Because a quality vinyl wrap shields the factory paint from UV and minor abrasion while it's on, the original finish underneath stays fresh — and a paint-safe, knifeless removal returns the car to stock colour for sale. The keys are starting with sound OEM paint and using premium 3M or Avery film, both of which we insist on at Obsidian Auto in Calgary.

Question 8

Can I take a wrapped car through a car wash?

Accepted Answer

Use touchless car washes or hand washing on a wrapped vehicle. Automatic brush washes can scratch the vinyl and lift the edges, and hot-wax cycles build up on matte and satin finishes, leaving streaks. Hand-washing with a pH-neutral soap is gentlest and keeps your wrap looking its best through Calgary's salty winters.

Question 9

How does edge wrapping work, and will the vinyl lift on the edges?

Accepted Answer

Properly installed vinyl is 'wrapped' around panel edges and into door jambs, hood lips, and trunk gaps so there's no visible seam and nothing for air or water to catch. At Obsidian Auto we post-heat every edge to roughly 90°C to kill the vinyl's memory and lock it down, and we tuck edges where the panel design allows. Edge lifting almost always comes from a rushed install that left film flat on a panel face instead of wrapped — which is exactly why we never cut corners on prep and post-heat. On vehicles where an edge truly can't be tucked, we use a clean knifeless cut line for a factory-tidy finish.

Question 10

Can a vinyl wrap be removed, and what does removal involve?

Accepted Answer

Yes — clean removal is one of vinyl's biggest advantages over a respray. On sound OEM paint, premium 3M and Avery film is gently heated and peeled back at a low angle so it releases without taking paint with it; any light adhesive residue is lifted with a citrus-based remover that's safe for clear coat. A full-vehicle removal typically takes a few hours. The only real risk is on cheap aftermarket repaint that was poorly bonded to begin with, which is why we always inspect and flag respray before wrapping.

Question 11

Do you wrap commercial fleets and work trucks in Calgary?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We handle commercial vinyl lettering, half-wraps, spot graphics, and full fleet branding using high-durability cast films built for Calgary winters and year-round UV. We can work from your existing brand artwork or design the graphics, colour-match across multiple vehicles for a consistent fleet look, and schedule installs to minimize downtime. Multi-vehicle fleets qualify for volume pricing — request a commercial quote and we'll map out the rollout.

Question 12

Is the vinyl wrap covered by a warranty?

Accepted Answer

Two layers of coverage apply. The films we install — genuine 3M 2080 and Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film — carry the manufacturer's own durability warranty (typically multiple years against defects like cracking, lifting, and excessive fading on vertical surfaces). On top of that, our paint-safe knifeless installation is backed by our workmanship guarantee, so if an edge lifts due to install, we make it right. Manufacturer coverage depends on proper care (touchless or hand washing, indoor parking where possible), which we walk you through at handoff.

Question 13

How long does it take to wrap a car, and can I drive it right after?

Accepted Answer

Timeline depends on coverage: a chrome delete or roof wrap is usually same-day, while a full colour-change wrap takes 3–5 business days because every panel is often removed for true edge-wrapped coverage. You can drive it as soon as you collect it, but we ask you to wait about 48 hours before washing and roughly a week before any pressure washing so the adhesive fully cures and the post-heated edges set — especially important in Calgary's cold, where curing is slower.

Question 14

How do I care for a matte or satin wrap differently from gloss?

Accepted Answer

Matte and satin vinyl needs slightly different care than gloss: never apply wax, sealant, or hot-wax car-wash cycles to a matte or satin finish — they fill the texture and leave permanent shiny streaks. Hand-wash with a pH-neutral matte-safe soap, dry with a clean microfibre, and spot-clean fuel or bug splatter promptly so it doesn't stain the flat finish. Gloss wraps are more forgiving and can take a vinyl-safe sealant for extra slickness. We send every Calgary client home with finish-specific care instructions so the wrap looks its best for years.
