Mobile car detailing in Calgary? Why we're studio-only
Obsidian Auto doesn't offer mobile detailing, and we don't offer pickup or delivery. Every detail happens in our climate-controlled studio at #2, 239 61 Ave SE, Calgary: you drop the car off, and most details are ready the same day. What a driveway detail can and can't do in Calgary's climate
On a mild, dry day, a good mobile detailer can wash and vacuum a car well. The trouble starts with the work that depends on the conditions — decontamination, polishing, sealants, coatings and heated interior extraction — and in Calgary the conditions work against you most of the year.
Water
A driveway detail runs on whatever water is there — usually your hose. Calgary tap water is hard and leaves mineral spots on dark paint, many outdoor taps are shut off for winter, and below freezing the rinse water freezes on the panel before it can be dried. The City's Stormwater Bylaw also bans soap in driveway runoff.
Heat and cold
Sealants, coatings and dressings bond inside a temperature window. A −20°C January driveway is outside it, and so is a black hood in July sun, where product flashes and streaks before it can be levelled. A chinook can swing the temperature by 20 degrees in an afternoon.
Lighting
Swirls, holograms and missed spots hide in flat daylight and disappear at dusk. Paint correction needs inspection lighting at several angles, which a driveway can't give you — so a finish can look perfect at handover and disappointing the next sunny morning.
Curing
Sealants and coatings need hours out of the wind, dust, pollen and rain to cure. A car left outside after a driveway detail starts collecting grit and road spray straight away. In the studio it stays indoors until the product has set.

As we grew, the honest truth was that parking lots and driveways come with variables no detailer controls: weather, lighting, dust, water.
We don't replace it with pickup, delivery or a shuttle either. Every car is dropped off and collected at the studio, where we control the conditions, let every product cure the way it should, and check the finish under proper lighting before you drive away.

Your Driveway vs. Our Studio
Even a skilled mobile detailer is limited by what a van can carry and what a driveway allows. These aren't opinions — they're the working conditions.
Wash runoff facts per the City of Calgary Stormwater Bylaw (37M2005): soap and detergents are prohibited in driveway and street runoff; only plain water is permitted. We have written up which home-wash methods stay on the right side of that rule, including what the restriction stages change.
