One thing we did find, and it is not in the FAQ where you would look for it. XPEL's limited warranty lists among its exclusions products installed with known or visible defects at the time of installation — and the examples it gives include chips to the painted surface. That is not a cure time and it is not installation guidance. But it is the one place a film manufacturer acknowledges the situation at all, and what it acknowledges is that filming over a chip you could see is your problem rather than theirs. Which is a reasonable position, and an argument for having the conversation before the film goes on rather than after.

That absence deserves to be stated rather than papered over, because the alternative is what the rest of the internet does: repeat a number until it acquires the authority of a specification. The convention is probably sound — the principle underneath it is real, in that fresh paint continues to release solvent well after it feels dry, and sealing it under an impermeable layer before that finishes is a sensible thing to avoid. DeFelsko does not make that recommendation itself; it reports that most auto manufacturers recommend a maximum of 8 microns of clear coat be removed, as prevention against UV damage. We could not find those individual manufacturer recommendations collected in one public place, so treat 8 microns as a well-sourced industry convention relayed by a gauge manufacturer rather than as one authority's published spec.

Eight microns is a smaller budget than almost any owner expects, and it is the entire reason a used car is a different conversation from a new one. You do not know how much of that budget a previous owner already spent. A car that has been machine-polished twice by an enthusiastic prior owner can have very little headroom left, and the gauge is the only way to find out before a pad touches the paint. This is the expectation most worth resetting before you spend the money, because it is the one that generates disappointment in the collection bay.

Paint protection film is optically clear. It lies over a chip; it does not fill it, and it does not blend it. What owners say on forums — and what that self-identified installer volunteered unprompted — is that chips can look more noticeable under film than they did before. Be clear about the strength of that claim: it is a pattern in anecdote and in our own collection-bay conversations, and we could find nobody who has measured or published it. The most plausible reading is straightforward optics rather than anything going wrong: a chip is a dull, light-scattering crater, and laying a fresh high-gloss layer across a finish that had gone slightly flat with age raises the contrast between the two. The chip did not change. Everything around it got glossier.

We would rather tell you that now. If the chips bother you visually, the answer is dealing with the chips — touch-up, or correction where the paint has the thickness for it — and not the film. The instinct that stops people is a sunk-cost one: the paint is already marked, so the moment has passed. It is worth taking that apart, because it is the wrong way round.
