Is ceramic coating actually worth it on a Tesla?

Honest answer: it depends on how long you're keeping the car. Tesla's factory clear coat is thin and soft, so it swirls fast and it's a magnet for water spots on Calgary's hard tap water. Ceramic coating won't stop a rock chip — that's PPF's job — but it does three things well: adds a harder, slicker top layer that resists wash-induced swirls, makes water and road grime bead and slide off so winter washes take half the time, and holds gloss while blocking UV so the paint doesn't dull. If it's a keeper and swirl marks drive you nuts, yes, it's worth it. If you're two years into a lease and don't care, a good sealant will do the job for less.

Standard vs Gold — what's the real difference?

Standard is a 5-year coating: 2 base layers and 1 top layer over freshly corrected paint. Gold is a thicker 7-year system — 3 base layers, 2 top layers — plus coating on your wheels and glass. The wheel coating is the sleeper upgrade: brake dust wipes off instead of baking on. The glass coating means rain sheets off the windshield above about 60 km/h, so you barely touch the wipers on Deerfoot. If the car's a keeper, Gold earns its keep in easier maintenance. If the budget's tight, Standard on the body is plenty.

Does ceramic coating stop rock chips on my Tesla?

Accepted Answer

No — and any shop that says otherwise is selling you something. Ceramic is only a couple microns of hardened, glass-like coating. It shrugs off wash swirls, bird droppings, and water spots, but it does nothing against gravel on Deerfoot or Stoney. For chip protection you need Tesla PPF — actual film that absorbs the impact. What most of my Tesla clients do: PPF the front end (hood, fenders, bumper, mirrors) where the chips land, then ceramic-coat the whole car on top. Film where it gets hit, ceramic everywhere for gloss and easy washing.

Can you ceramic coat over PPF?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it's the combo I'd run on my own Tesla. PPF goes on first as the impact layer, then ceramic goes over both the film and the bare paint so the whole car behaves the same — water beads off the film and the panels alike, and the coating actually extends the life of the PPF's top coat. You get rock-chip protection up front and a slick, self-cleaning, glossy finish everywhere else. Best of both, no real downside except the price.

Will ceramic coating mess with my Autopilot sensors or cameras?

No. Before we coat, we mask off every camera, the radar and ultrasonic sensors, and the parking sensors, and we keep coating off those housings entirely. Autopilot, Full Self-Driving, and parking assist work exactly the same afterward. This is the sort of detail that separates a shop that coats Teslas every week from one figuring it out on yours.

How do I wash a ceramic-coated Tesla in Calgary?

Easy — that's the whole point. Rinse, hand wash with a pH-neutral soap and two buckets, dry. The coating makes dirt let go instead of clinging. Skip the automatic brush washes; those spinning brushes are exactly what put swirls into soft Tesla paint in the first place. Every few months, top it with the maintenance spray we send you home with. In our winters the hydrophobic surface really shows its worth — road salt and brine rinse off far faster than they would on bare paint.

At Obsidian Auto, Standard runs from $1,100 (Model 3) to $1,400 (Model X), and Gold from $1,700 to $2,000. Model 3 is the cheapest because it's the smallest; Model X sits at the top because those falcon-wing doors and the extra surface area take longer to coat properly. Why does Tesla paint swirl and water-spot so easily?

Two reasons. Tesla's factory clear coat is on the thin, soft side compared with most German or Japanese paint, so it marks up faster from wash mitts, brushes, and grit. And Calgary tap water is hard — loaded with minerals — so when droplets dry on a panel they etch little rings into that soft clear. Ceramic coating tackles both at once: a harder sacrificial layer that resists the swirls, and a hydrophobic surface that won't let water sit long enough to spot.

Can you coat the glass roof and windows too?

Accepted Answer

Yes — it's included in the Gold package. Coating the glass roof, windshield, and side glass makes rain bead and fly off at speed, cuts glare, and makes bugs and ice much easier to clear. On a Tesla with that big panoramic roof it's genuinely worth it: less water spotting across all that glass, and it stays cleaner between washes.
