Paint Protection Film
- Will the film turn yellow over time?
- No. We use premium, top-tier films (3M, STEK, SunTek, and GSWF) that are engineered with advanced UV inhibitors to prevent yellowing. Our films come with a 10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, bubbling, and peeling.
- Can I see the edges of the film?
- We specialize in 'wrapped edges' wherever possible. This means we wrap the film around the panel edges so the edge disappears with the panel. Where wrapping isn't technically possible, the edge is precison-cut to be as invisible as possible.
- Does PPF fix existing scratches?
- PPF has self-healing properties that can mask very fine swirl marks, effectively 'filling' them in. However, it is not a paint correction solution for deep scratches. We highly recommend our paint correction service before application to ensure a flawless finish underneath.
- What happens if a rock hits the film?
- The film is designed to absorb the impact energy. For minor impacts and scratches, the self-healing top coat will repair itself with heat (sun or hot water). For major impacts that would have chipped your paint, the film sacrifices itself to save the factory finish.
Ceramic Coating
- Does Ceramic Coating prevent rock chips?
- No. This is the most common misconception. Ceramic Coating is a chemical bond that provides immense gloss, UV protection, and hydrophobic (easy clean) properties. It does NOT offer impact protection against rocks. For impact protection, you need PPF.
- How long does the coating last?
- It depends on the package you choose. We offer professional-grade coatings that range from 1-year to 8-year durability. Proper maintenance (regular hand washing) is key to maximizing the lifespan of the coating.
- Can I use an automatic car wash?
- We strongly advise against 'soft touch' or brush-style automatic washes as they are abrasive and will induce swirl marks, damaging both the coating and your paint. Touchless washes are safe in a pinch, but hand washing is always the gold standard.
- Do I still need to wax my car?
- No! One of the biggest benefits of ceramic coating is that you never need to wax your car again. The coating provides a depth of shine and protection far superior to wax that lasts for years, not weeks.
Window Tint
- What is the difference between Carbon and Ceramic tint?
- Carbon tint provides great looks and privacy with color stability. Ceramic tint is the performance choice—it rejects significantly more heat (Infrared rays) without needing to be super dark. It's essential for keeping your cabin cool in summer and protecting your interior from UV damage.
- Is window tint legal in Alberta?
- In Alberta, you can tint the rear side windows and back windshield to any darkness level you desire. However, tinting the front driver and passenger side windows is technically prohibited by law, as is the front windshield (except for a top visor strip).
- Will the tint bubble or turn purple?
- Not at Obsidian Auto. We only use premium films backed by a lifetime warranty. The 'purple' look comes from cheap dye-based films breaking down. Our films are color-stable and guaranteed to perform for as long as you own the vehicle.
Detailing & Correction
- What is Paint Correction?
- Paint correction is the skilled process of machine polishing the paint to permanently remove defects like swirl marks, scratches, water spot etching, and oxidation. We essentially level the clear coat microscopic amounts to create a perfect mirror finish.
- How long does a full detail take?
- A basic interior/exterior premium detail can take 3-5 hours. A multi-stage paint correction and protection package is a major project that typically takes 1-3 days depending on the condition of the vehicle and the level of perfection desired.
- Can you remove bad odors?
- Yes. We use advanced ozone generators and enzymatic cleaners to eliminate organic odors (smoke, pets, food) at the source, rather than just masking them with perfumes. It resets the interior environment.

- Do you offer courtesy vehicles?
- Dropping your car off should be the easy part. While we don't have a loaner fleet, we can arrange local shuttle services to get you where you need to go, or assist in coordinating rental vehicle options for longer duration services.
